VFX

I've been working on VFX for personal projects for a few years now. Here you will find some VFX for various projects for video games, or film. I typically create my own alphas in photoshop.

Portal VFX

One of my more complex VFX works. I wanted to create something that looked like an unstable gateway. The portal begins to open up, hesitates, and then opens up and begins to rotate. It was so interesting to see that some alpha images that I create in Photoshop could be put together and create something as visually interesting as this. In my work, I always say to myself "Okay, this is good, I think I'm done," but I always come back to add more, because I love doing it, and I love improving on my work. Initially, there was no rising smoke or cinders, and I think that alone added so much character, it goes to show if you take the time to improve something, the end product can really benefit from it.

Elemental Volume VFX

Here are some experimental VFX. This was me dipping my toes into creating Volume VFX that works on older generations of computers, hence why some of these VFX look a little dated. I thought the best way to do this was to create some elemental effects. In order from left to right, poison, weakened, fire, and ice elements. One of my all-time favorite VFX that I created was the purple weakened status effect. Something about it looks other-worldly. A mix of shattered glass and a black hole. The way it pulses ominously sells it to me.

Fireball VFX

I had so much fun creating this fireball. Created using the Unity particle system, it has around 4 alpha images that you can find below. This is when I first discovered bloom and was having a field day, that's actually what inspired me to make it a fireball. The muzzle flash disperses and a burst of shrapnel is fired out of the cannon. Then the traveling sparks follow after the ball itself which is a spinning sphere that has a unique texture that I created which allows it to appear as though it is flickering. Finally, the impact happens and the ball of fire implodes, causing a small explosion and dissipating.

VFX Re-creations

When I first began learning how to do video game VFX work, I thought it would be fun to try and re-create some effects from existing games. As I learned more and became more knowledgeable, I found myself actually being able to do this! Here are some results of that.

Alpha Images

Heres a few examples of the alpha images I used to create some of the VFX you saw above. I created these light maps in photoshop. (Click on them to see the full image).
